MCEVOY APARTMENTS and DUPONT APARTMENTS
365 units: 224-unit high-density tower + 141-unit large family tower
The McEvoy Apartments and the Dupont Apartments are two affordable housing developments located on a 1.13 acre site at 699 West San Carlos Street (APN 261-38-001, -004, -030, -047, -048 and -049), immediately adjacent to the planned Google San Jose campus and a half mile from Diridon Station, which is slated for significant expansion and provides high-quality transit connections to San Francisco, Oakland, and all the way to Sacramento. The property currently has a welding business onsite, which sold the property to First Community Housing.
First Community Housing plans to build a total of 365 units of multifamily rental housing which will serve households earning 30% to 80% of area median income. Both phases of development are planned to comply with Santa Clara County Measure A program requirements by reserving units for households that previously experienced homelessness served through the County’s rapid rehousing (RRH) program. McEvoy Apartments seeks to provide high density housing for working individuals and couples with 224 studios and one-bedroom units, and the Dupont Apartments will house families with children through a community of 141 units composed of 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom units. Two units in each building will be reserved for on-site staff per building.
FCH is a recognized leader in creating green, affordable housing and like FCH’s other new construction projects, both towers are being designed to achieve LEED Platinum and will introduce a number of novel prefabricated technologies. The buildings will be built using an innovative mass timber frame with a traditional lateral-load resisting system. Both towers will be 13 stories, consisting of 12 stories over a podium.
Common areas will include generous gathering areas, including large outdoor terraces on the podium and roof, a fitness room, computer lab, open lounge/seating areas, several laundry rooms, and offices for management and social services. The towers will share a common second floor courtyard with playgrounds and an operating urban farm. The developments will provide significant bike storage, EV charging, and stacked auto parking. In addition to sustainable building strategies such as selecting healthy building materials, solar photovoltaics, incorporating water and energy efficient measures, and providing each household with free VTA Smart Passes, FCH continues to seek out innovative new technologies to showcase in these signature buildings.
The projects were approved unanimously by the San Jose City Council in February 2020 and construction is expected to begin in Spring 2022.
